The purpose of the Spiritual Adoption program is to inform and educate children from an early age about the dignity and sacredness of all human life. Many babies are at risk even before they are born: some have families struggling in terrible poverty, or are trapped in war-torn areas. Others are in danger of abortion because of a crisis pregnancy. Although we may never meet any of these families we can reach out to them in spiritual and material ways.
More than anything these moms, dads and babies need our prayers. This program invites families to spiritually adopt a baby for nine months up until their birth, naming the baby and praying for him or her each day. Families will receive monthly updates about the baby’s progress as he/she grows toward birth. At the end of the nine months, families will be encouraged to participate in an outreach (baby shower or collection of baby clothes, supplies, etc.) to benefit organizations that help at risk families.
Directions for Participation
Discuss the project with your child(ren) and choose a name for the child you will be adopting through prayer. (You adopt 1 child per family).
Contact the Faith Formation Office to obtain a “Spiritual Adoption packet” and provide the name of your adopted child.
Write your baby’s name on the prayer card provided, as well as the start date of your “adoption” and be sure to pray for the baby and family each day.
Follow along with the monthly prayer planner to learn about the baby’s growth and development.
Watch for periodic email updates on the baby’s progress. These updates will also be displayed in the Gathering Space.
In early fall (around the 8th month mark of the baby’s development) you’ll receive an invitation to the “baby shower” at the parish to celebrate the upcoming birth and help provide for the baby’s initial needs. It is not required to attend the shower, but you will be asked to send a “welcome” card for your baby if you can’t attend in person.
